About Ear Surgery
Throughout their 40 years of combined surgical experience, board-certified plastic surgeons Dr. Elliott and Dr. Summer Black have become well-versed in surgeries (both major and minor) of the ears. Plastic surgery of the ears (ear pinning) is known in the medical community as otoplasty, which improves the shape and size of the ears in relation to the patient's head. At Dr. Black Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery, we perform otoplasty on children as young as 5, but our services for the ears are not limited to ear pinning for children (mainly to stop teasing and/or bullying from other children). Adults, who have misshapen ears, or damaged ears from trauma, also seek the help of a trusted plastic surgeon at our office in Metairie, LA as well. Our board-certified plastic surgeons can redefine the shape and size of the overall ear appearance with their artistic skill and talent in surgical techniques.
We also offer treatments to help patients with torn earlobes, skin damage on the earlobe, and gauged earlobe repair. If you have a question about the condition of your ears, or would like to set up a consultation for your child with large, protruding ears, please call and set up a consultation at our office.
"I've been a patient of Dr Summer Blacks for about 4 years and I would never go anywhere else. I am ALWAYS ecstatic with her work and have had Botox and Restylane filler in my cheeks and lips. Dr Black is not only a total perfectionist but she becomes a friend you feel comfortable confiding in and sharing your life with. I would recommend Dr Black to my own mother....and in fact I did! Now we are both her patients who regularly visit her for all our anti-aging facial perfecting cosmetic work."- A.R. / Google / Feb 06, 2017
"Dr. Summer Black, Dr. Elliot Black, and their team are all amazing! They truly care about their patients. Dr. S. Black gave me her honest opinion about the cosmetic procedure I wanted and told me she didn't even think I needed the surgery. This practice does not try to milk money out of their patients like other places. I love her honest opinion, and I also love my results!"- M.H. / Google / Jun 19, 2019
"Dr. Summer Black is absolutely amazing for several reasons. Dr. Black answered all my questions during my consult and took as much time as I needed. She also encouraged me to call or text her personally with any additional questions I may have thought of after my initial consult. We thoroughly discussed what my “goals” were for having the En Bloc Total Capsulectomy. She was very honest and matter of fact about what I could expect from having this procedure. She did not try to sell me on having additional procedures, even though I specifically asked if I need to have a lift with this procedure (which clearly would have been more expensive), but she told me she did not think I needed it. I have complete confidence in Dr. Summer Black and her father (prior to the surgery and even more so now on the other side). They operate as a team which makes me even more confident knowing there are two wonderful plastic surgeons operating on me. Dr. Black took videos and pictures explaining what she found during the procedure. She called me the evening of my surgery to check on me and we communicated for the next two weeks every day or every other day regarding my recovery. The personal care you receive from Dr. Black Plastic Surgery is excellent (exceeded all my expectations). The results of my surgery are amazing and exactly what we had discussed. If I decide to have additional plastic surgery in the future I would absolutely return to her, hands down. Dr. Black also offers dermal fillers. She injected my lips to increase the fullness. I experienced minimal pain and the attention from the staff was impeccable and I love my lips. Thanks Dr. Black, you gave me a new lease on life!"- M.K. / Google / Jun 18, 2019

"I was tired. I was sick. I was tired of being sick and tired. I had food, alcohol and medicine intolerances. I had unexplainable symptoms, arm pain, rashes, joint pain, hair loss, anxiety and heart palpitations. There were times when I wondered if this was all in my head and if I would ever feel “normal” again. I came across Breast Implant Illness symptoms thanks to a friend and immediately knew in my gut, that was the culprit. I researched qualified surgeons that perform explants and kept coming across Dr. Summer Blacks name. I asked around and knew someone that had an explant and Dr. Black was her surgeon as well so I made a consultation. My personal experience with Dr. Black has been beyond excellent. She is very knowledgeable and compassionate so with little hesitation, I scheduled my explant. I have been in the medical field for over 20 years and you don’t meet many doctors that give you their cell phone number much less answer a text within an hour. The surgery center she operates at, Crescent City Hospital, is phenomenal. The staff is attentive and caring. I woke up from surgery and felt great, my arm pain gone and I could take a deep breath. My scarring is minimal and clean. To say the surgery changed my life sounds cliche BUT it really has changed the quality of my life. I’m so glad I listened to my gut. Thank you Dr. Black."- C.A. / Google / Apr 12, 2019
Do I Qualify?
Our ear surgery patients should be at least 5-years-of-age, and have one of the following concerns:
- Ears that protrude or stick out from the head
- Ears that are misshapen from a trauma or congenital defect
- Ears that are disproportionately large compared to the head
- Earlobes that are torn from wearing heavy earrings, traumatic injury, or gauged earlobes (body art modifications)
What to Expect
Otoplasty reshapes the ears by making small incisions behind the ear to expose the cartilage. The cartilage is then removed and reshaped until the ear reaches the desired size and shape. Any excess skin is removed from the ear and in some cases, the ears will be repositioned closer to the head. The technique to treat protrusion (ears that stick out from the head) is commonly referred to as the "pinning back" of the ears. The overall goal of otoplasty is to give patients natural-looking ears and to restore their self-confidence.
Patients can expect swelling and bruising after undergoing otoplasty. However, this will subside after the first couple of weeks of recovery. An elastic headband is usually worn for the first several weeks after surgery to keep the ears in their new position and patients are advised to avoid strenuous work for approximately 1 – 2 months after their surgery. Children who have otoplasty will need to be closely monitored throughout the healing process, so they do not compromise the healing of their ears or cause agitation by rubbing or scratching.

Improve Your Ears
Otoplasty can help patients, especially children, enjoy the way they look and restore their confidence and happiness. Having misshapen or excessively large ears can cause unwanted attention and teasing that can affect self esteem. We encourage anyone who is looking into otoplasty for themselves or their children to schedule a consultation. It is our goal to help you feel good about your appearance. If you have other questions about your ears, or need a repair of a torn earlobe, please call and schedule your consultation at your earliest convenience at Dr. Black Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery.
